An Example of the Calibration Process
During the course of a typical thermometer calibration, the technician will:- Observe the thermometer to determine critical information and parameters, such as operating range, tolerance, manufacturer, model, and serial number.
- Determine appropriate test points at 10, 50, and 90% of the instrument operating range.
- Adjust a NIST traceable metrology well or oil bath calibration standard to accurately maintain temperature at the first test point
- Insert the thermometer into the metrology well or oil bath calibration standard
- Allow several minutes for the thermometer to equilibrate with the standard and stabilize at the established temperature.
- Immediately record the temperature reading on the thermometer and the temperature reading on the calibration standard.
- Immediately record the deviation between the calibration standard and the thermometer
- Repeat process for remaining temperature test points
- Finalize the calibration certificate and notify the customer of any performance deviations.
